Dump Truck Price: What a Dump Truck Costs New and Used in 2026

How much a dump truck costs, from real October 2026 listings and auctions: a new 8x4 at a $249,784 asking price, used units from $26,950, plus payment math.

Two white tandem-axle dump trucks with dark steel beds parked side by side on a gravel lot.

Quick answer

A dump truck costs from under $30,000 for an older used tandem to about $250,000 new, depending on age, miles, axles and body. On October 28, 2026, Custom Truck One Source listed a new Peterbilt 567 8x4 at a $249,784 asking price, and ten 2025 Kenworth T880s had sold on Purple Wave for $180,400 to $190,300.

How much does a dump truck cost?

In our October 2026 sample, a dump truck cost from under $30,000 for an older used tandem to about $250,000 for a new heavy truck, and articulated (off-road) dump trucks ran higher still. On October 28, 2026, we found a new Peterbilt 567 8x4 at a $249,784 asking price, ten 2025 Kenworth T880 dump trucks that had sold at auction for $180,400 to $190,300, and a used single axle at an $87,000 asking price.

Here is what we saw, with every price linked to the page it came from:

Truck Class and condition Price Source Date
2023 Chevrolet 5500, Godwin dump body, 19,500 lb GVWR Single axle (4x2), new $86,094 asking price Custom Truck One Source listing Seen Oct 28, 2026

2015 Freightliner 108SD with plow and spreader, 326,811 miles Tandem, used $26,950 sold at auction Purple Wave lot EO8761 Sold Oct 27, 2026
2012 Freightliner M2 with plow and spreader, 77,594 miles Tandem, used $55,000 sold at auction Purple Wave lot EP7842 Sold Oct 27, 2026
2016 Kenworth T680, 17 ft steel body, 527,691 miles Tri-axle (8x4), used $65,000 asking price (Buy Now) IronPlanet listing Seen Oct 28, 2026
2025 Kenworth T880, 21 cu yd Logan body, 42,856 miles Tri-axle with pusher, used $185,900 sold at auction Purple Wave lot ZA0845 Sold Oct 22, 2026
2026 Peterbilt 567, 16 ft Load King body, 20 cu yd, 79,500 lb GVWR 8x4 with steerable pusher axle, new $249,784 asking price Custom Truck One Source listing Seen Oct 28, 2026
2014 Cat 725C, 8,121 hours Articulated, used $139,000 asking price (Buy Now) IronPlanet listing Seen Oct 28, 2026
2023 Bell B50E, 5,572 hours Articulated, used $249,000 asking price (Buy Now) IronPlanet listing Seen Oct 28, 2026

How to read this table:

  • Asking prices are where negotiation starts. IronPlanet Buy Now prices and dealer prices are what the seller wants, not what a truck sold for.
  • Auction prices are what someone actually paid. The Purple Wave figures are the "contract price," which on the lot page is the winning bid plus a 10% buyer's premium. The 2025 Kenworth, for example, had a winning bid of $169,000.
  • Dealer prices exclude extras. Both Custom Truck One Source listings say the price does not include freight or delivery, sales tax, titling or registration fees.

How much is a used dump truck?

In the results we checked, older or high-mileage used tandems and single axles sold or were listed for about $27,000 to $87,000, and ten late-model 2025 Kenworth T880s sold for $180,400 to $190,300. Condition, miles and equipment move the price more than the brand on the hood.

Look at the two used tri-axles above. The 2016 Kenworth T680 with 527,691 miles had a $65,000 asking price. The 2025 Kenworth T880 with 42,856 miles sold for $185,900. That is close to three times the money for a truck nine years newer with about a twelfth of the miles.

The same pattern shows up in the auction results. In one Purple Wave sale that closed October 22, 2026, ten 2025 Kenworth T880 dump trucks from Washington County, Alabama sold for contract prices between $180,400 and $190,300 (Purple Wave dump truck results, seen Oct 28, 2026). Matched trucks from one fleet selling within about $10,000 of each other is a good sign that this is the real market for that spec today.

Older trucks can be very cheap at auction, but price alone tells you little. The same results page showed many 1990s and 2000s dump trucks selling for under $10,000. Those trucks often carry deferred repairs, so ask a lender early whether it will finance a truck of that age and condition.

How much does a new dump truck cost?

A new dump truck in our sample cost from $86,094 for a light single axle to $249,784 for a heavy 8x4, before freight, tax and registration. Government purchases fall in the same range.

New truck Price Source Date
2023 Chevrolet 5500 4x2 with Godwin body $86,094 asking price Custom Truck One Source Seen Oct 28, 2026
Freightliner M2 with 14 ft contractor dump body (three units, axle not stated) $437,680.80 for three, about $145,894 each, under Florida Sheriffs Association contract FSA25-VEH23.0 City of Tampa agenda item Meeting date June 18, 2026
2026 dump truck (axle and body not stated) $227,724 principal amount, against $185,000 budgeted City of Gardiner, Maine agenda item Meeting date Sept 17, 2025
2026 Peterbilt 567 8x4 with 16 ft Load King body $249,784 asking price Custom Truck One Source Seen Oct 28, 2026

Two notes on new prices:

  • Prices can rise between order and delivery. Gardiner budgeted $185,000 for its truck, but when it was ready for pickup the agenda says "the cost of the vehicle is $227,724."
  • Municipal trucks are often built for plowing. City and county trucks frequently include plows, wings and spreaders. That raises the new price and is why so many ex-municipal trucks at auction carry that equipment.

How much does an articulated dump truck cost?

Used articulated dump trucks on IronPlanet had Buy Now asking prices from $139,000 for a 2014 Cat 725C with 8,121 hours to $249,000 for a 2023 Bell B50E with 5,572 hours on October 28, 2026. Other Buy Now prices on the same page included $300,000 for a 2021 Volvo A45G with 6,636 hours and $485,000 for a 2022 Komatsu HM300-5 with 877 hours (IronPlanet articulated dump trucks, seen Oct 28, 2026).

Articulated trucks are off-road machines, so they are priced by hours and payload class, not miles. A larger payload class (the Bell B50E and Volvo A45G are among the larger models listed) generally costs more than a smaller one of the same age. We did not find a dated new articulated price we could verify, so ask the dealer for a written quote.

What drives the price of a dump truck?

Age and miles drive price the most, followed by axle configuration, body size, emissions equipment and any added equipment. The listings above show each of these at work.

  • Age, miles and hours. Compare the two Kenworth tri-axles above. Also check engine hours: the 2016 T680 showed 10,843 engine hours on its listing, and the 2016 Western Star 4700 we cover below showed 13,355. Dump trucks idle and run the hoist while parked, so hours add wear the odometer does not show.
  • Axle configuration and weight rating. More axles mean more legal payload and a higher price. A tri-axle, or a tandem with a pusher axle, can haul more per trip than a plain tandem, and a tandem more than a single axle.
  • CDL requirements. Under FMCSA rules, a Class B CDL is required for any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more (FMCSA, CDL classes, seen Oct 28, 2026). The International HV607 in the table is rated at 25,999 lb GVWR, just under that line, and the Chevrolet 5500 at 19,500 lb. Smaller trucks can widen your pool of drivers.
  • Body size and build. Body length, cubic yards, steel type and features like air-operated end gates and roll tarps all add cost. The new Peterbilt 567 above carries a 20 cubic yard body with AR450 steel floor and sides.
  • Federal excise tax on heavy trucks. Federal law imposes a 12% tax on the first retail sale of truck chassis and bodies, and exempts those suitable for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 33,000 pounds or less (26 U.S.C. 4051, seen Oct 28, 2026). The Peterbilt 567 listing says "FET INCLUDED." When comparing new heavy trucks, confirm every quote includes it.
  • Emissions year and equipment. Newer trucks carry an EPA engine label and use diesel exhaust fluid; the 2022 International lists a 2021 US EPA label. Check the emissions equipment on any used truck. A 2016 Western Star 4700 with five axles (including a steerable pusher) that sold on Purple Wave for $62,700 on October 22, 2026 lists its DPF, DEF and EGR systems as deleted (Purple Wave lot FK3680, seen Oct 28, 2026). If the emissions system has been modified, ask the seller for documentation and tell the lender up front. Ask your compliance advisor before buying one.
  • Plows, spreaders and other upfits. Both Freightliner tandems in the table came with plows and spreaders. That equipment has value only if you will use it.

Our dump trucks buying guide covers inspection points in more detail.

Should you buy a dump truck at auction or from a dealer?

Auctions can be cheaper, but you buy as-is and must pay fast; dealers cost more but let you negotiate, inspect at your pace and sometimes get warranty coverage. The Purple Wave lots above say the item "will sell to the highest bidder" with no reserve and that payment is due within two business days after the auction.

If you plan to bid, arrange financing before the auction closes, add the buyer's premium to your maximum bid, and read the full lot description for notes like check engine lights, air leaks or emissions modifications. Our article on auction equipment financing explains how to line up a lender before you bid, and the used equipment buying checklist covers the paperwork. For the general trade-offs, see new vs used equipment.

What is the monthly payment on a dump truck?

On the prices above, estimated payments range from about $1,410 a month (the $87,000 used single axle, 72 months, 9% estimated APR) to about $6,030 a month (the $249,784 new Peterbilt 567, 48 months, 13% estimated APR).

These examples assume 10% down, estimated APRs of 9% and 13%, terms of 48, 60 and 72 months, payments rounded to the nearest $10, and exclude taxes, fees and insurance.

These are illustrations, not quotes. Ironmark does not set rates and is not a lender; your actual rate, term and down payment come from the lender and depend on your credit, the truck and the deal. The term a lender offers can depend on the truck's age and miles.

A simple check before you buy: divide the monthly payment by the number of days you expect to haul in a month. That tells you how much of each day's revenue goes to the truck before fuel, driver pay, insurance, tires and repairs. Run the numbers with your own local haul rates and your accountant.

How do you finance a dump truck?

A dump truck can be financed with an equipment loan or a lease secured by the truck itself. Ironmark is not a lender: we connect you with third-party lenders, and those lenders make the credit decision and set the rate and terms.

Lenders look at your credit, time in business, hauling experience, the down payment and the truck's age, miles and value. Each lender sets its own criteria, so ask how the truck's age, miles and history, and any customer contracts you have, affect the offer. Our article on what lenders look at explains each factor.

What do you need for a dump truck financing quote?

  • The truck: year, make, model, axle configuration, GVWR, body make and size, miles, engine hours, VIN and price
  • The seller: dealer, auction (with lot number and closing date) or private party
  • Any added equipment included in the price, such as a plow, spreader or tarp
  • Your down payment amount and where it is coming from
  • Your CDL, or your driver's, and your hauling experience
  • Business formation documents and EIN, plus USDOT number if you have one
  • Recent bank statements and business tax returns if the company already operates
  • Customer contracts or a list of the hauling work you expect to do
  • Your insurance agent's contact for proof of coverage
