Quick answer

On October 15, 2026, new septic trucks with 1,200 to 5,000 gallon tanks had asking prices of $132,000 to $279,900 on Truck Paper and Pumper. Used 2019 to 2021 trucks with 2,000 to 4,200 gallon tanks asked $78,000 to $134,000. Pump package, tank material, chassis and miles all move the price, so compare build sheets, not just gallons.

How much does a septic pump truck cost?

On October 15, 2026, new septic trucks (defined in the table below) with 1,200 to 5,000 gallon tanks had asking prices from $132,000 for a 1,200 gallon Ford F550 on Truck Paper to $279,900 for a 5,000 gallon Western Star on Pumper. Used trucks with a stated tank of 1,000 gallons or more asked $25,000 to $210,000 on Truck Paper. Every 2019 to 2021 truck we found with a 2,000 to 4,200 gallon tank asked between $78,000 and $134,000 (see the used table below).

Smaller new builds with 980 gallon tanks asked $115,500 to $126,500 on Truck Paper, and a new 2027 International HX with no tank size listed asked $290,000 on Truck Paper. These are asking prices, not sale prices. Truck Paper showed 437 septic tank truck listings that day. We read the first 112, plus Pumper's classifieds. Truck Paper's septic auction results hide the sale price behind a login, so this page uses no auction prices.

For context, ServiceCore, a software company that serves septic and portable sanitation operators, estimates $150,000 to $400,000 for a new truck and $35,000 to $120,000 for a used one (article updated September 2, 2026). The live listings ran below that new range at the small end and above that used range at the top. Price the exact build you want, not an average. If you are still deciding between the two, see new vs used equipment.

What does a septic truck cost by tank size?

Bigger tanks cost more, but the spread inside each size is wide. On October 15, 2026, new 2,500 gallon builds asked $139,900 to $159,000, and new 4,000 gallon builds asked $155,000 to $273,200.

What does a 3,000 gallon septic truck cost?

Used trucks with 3,000 to 3,600 gallon tanks asked $25,000 to $126,000 on October 15, 2026, across the Truck Paper and Pumper listings we read. The cheapest were 2002 to 2013 models. The highest were 2019 and 2020 models, such as a 2020 Freightliner M2 106 with a 3,600 gallon tank at $126,000 on Truck Paper.

The closest match to exactly 3,000 gallons was a 2002 International WorkStar 7500 listed at 3,001.79 gallons (a 2,500 imperial gallon tank) with an asking price of $42,225 in Manitoba on Truck Paper. No new truck in our scan had a 3,000 gallon tank; in the new listings we read, tank sizes went from 2,500 straight to 4,000 gallons.

Why do septic trucks with the same tank size cost so differently?

The tank is only part of the truck. Pump package, tank material, chassis and miles all move the price. Two 2027 International HV trucks with 4,000 gallon tanks asked $175,000 and $262,240 in the same Truck Paper search on October 15, 2026.

The listings do not explain the whole gap. Ask each dealer for the build sheet so you compare like with like.

Tank material

Listings showed aluminum, steel, carbon steel and stainless steel tanks. Aluminum weighs less than steel for the same size, which leaves more of the truck's weight rating for the load. Both of the highest priced new 4,000 gallon builds had aluminum tanks; the $155,000 and $175,000 listings did not state the material. Get the material and wall thickness in writing.

Pump and CFM

The pump sets how fast you fill the tank and how far you can pull from. In these listings, bigger tanks came with bigger pumps.

Chassis and CDL

Chassis size follows tank size. In the Truck Paper listings we read on October 15, 2026, Ford F550, F600 and RAM 5500 chassis carried 720 to 1,700 gallons (page 3). Trucks such as the Freightliner M2, International MV and HV, Kenworth T270 and Mack MD carried 2,000 to 4,200 gallons (page 1). Larger chassis such as the Freightliner 114SD, Peterbilt 567 and 579 and Western Star mostly carried 4,000 to 5,000 gallons (see the tables above).

The CDL question turns on weight rating, not gallons. Under FMCSA rules (seen Oct 15, 2026), a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more needs a Class B CDL. Read the GVWR on the door label, or ask the dealer for it, before you buy. If the truck needs a CDL, every driver you hire for it needs one too.

What size septic truck should I buy first?

Buy the tank that fits the jobs you will run most and the drive to your disposal site. A bigger tank saves disposal trips. A smaller truck costs less, fits tighter driveways and may stay under the CDL weight line.

Start with the tanks you will pump. Minnesota rule 7080.1930 (seen Oct 15, 2026) sets a 1,000 gallon minimum for homes with three or fewer bedrooms and 1,500 gallons for four or five. Washington's rule (seen Oct 15, 2026) sets 1,000 gallons for four bedrooms or fewer. The EPA (seen Oct 15, 2026) says household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years, so a residential route depends on a large customer base rather than frequent repeat visits.

If most of your work is full 1,000 gallon home tanks, a 2,000 gallon waste tank holds roughly two of them before a disposal run, and a 4,000 gallon tank roughly four. Then weigh the price gap. On October 15, 2026, used 2019 and 2020 trucks with 2,000 gallon tanks asked $78,000 (Truck Paper, page 1) to $96,950 (Truck Paper, page 2). Used 2019 trucks with 4,000 to 4,200 gallon tanks asked $116,000 (Truck Paper, page 4) to $134,000 (Truck Paper, page 1).

Questions that settle the size:

  • How far is your disposal site or treatment plant, and what are its hours?
  • Are your jobs mostly homes, or larger commercial tanks and grease traps?
  • Do your routes include tight rural driveways or soft yards?
  • Will you hire drivers, and do they hold a CDL?
  • Does your state or county permit cover the truck size you want?

What should I check on a used septic truck?

Check the pump, the tank and the paperwork before you negotiate price. Our vacuum truck buying guide covers the inspection step by step. The listings themselves point to a few septic specific checks.

  • Pump hours and rebuilds. A 2007 TranStar listed its pump as "just rebuilt," and a 2019 Kenworth T270 listed a new tank and a new Masport pump. Ask for receipts and hours.
  • Waste vs fresh gallons. A 2017 Ford F550 on Pumper's classifieds listed 900 gallons split 500 waste and 400 fresh (seen Oct 15, 2026). Total gallons is not waste capacity.
  • Listing errors. On October 15, 2026, two Truck Paper listings showed a "36,000 gal" tank on a 2019 M2, one said "SOLD!" in its description while still showing a price, and several had a model year in the title that did not match the description. Confirm the VIN, year, tank size and availability before you send a deposit.
  • Who is selling. Truck Paper listings that day included trucks offered by a septic company and by sellers under personal names, not only dealers. See private-party equipment financing if you are buying from an owner.

Run the general used equipment buying checklist on the chassis too.

What is the monthly payment on a septic truck?

At 10% down, a $150,000 septic truck works out to about $2,430 to $3,620 a month in the scenarios below. A $60,000 used truck runs about $970 to $1,450, and a $270,000 new build about $4,380 to $6,520.

The table assumes 10% down, estimated APRs of 9% and 13%, terms of 48, 60 and 72 months, standard amortization, and payments rounded to the nearest $10, with taxes, fees and insurance excluded.

Truck price Amount financed Estimated APR 48 months 60 months 72 months
$60,000 $54,000 9% $1,340 $1,120 $970
$60,000 $54,000 13% $1,450 $1,230 $1,080
$150,000 $135,000 9% $3,360 $2,800 $2,430
$150,000 $135,000 13% $3,620 $3,070 $2,710
$270,000 $243,000 9% $6,050 $5,040 $4,380
$270,000 $243,000 13% $6,520 $5,530 $4,880

These are illustrations, not quotes. Ironmark does not set rates. Actual rates depend on the lender, the business, credit, time in business and the equipment.

For scale: $60,000 is close to the used 1,500 gallon 2021 Ford F550 ($59,950) and the 3,600 gallon 2007 TranStar ($59,000) above. $150,000 is close to a new 1,500 gallon Ford F600 ($150,500). $270,000 sits near the top of the new table, between the $262,240 and $273,200 asking prices for new 4,000 gallon aluminum builds. What do lenders look at on a septic truck loan?

Lenders start with the basics in what lenders look at: credit, time in business, cash flow and the equipment. On a septic deal, a few items carry extra weight.

  • Pump hours next to miles. A septic truck runs its pump while parked at every stop, so the odometer alone undersells wear.
  • Tank inspection records. Thickness readings, weld repairs and any tank replacement.
  • Hauler permit. Your state or county septage hauling license, and whether the truck is listed on it.
  • Route customers. Recurring residential customers, commercial accounts, real estate inspection work and municipal contracts show where the payments come from.
  • Seasonality in freeze states. If frozen ground slows pumping in winter, expect questions about how you cover payments in slow months.

Ironmark is not a lender. Lenders make the credit decision and set the rate and terms.

What should I have ready for a septic truck quote?

Gather the truck's specs, your hauler permit and your business financials before you ask for a quote.

  • The listing link or dealer quote, with tank gallons (waste and fresh), tank material, and pump make, model and CFM
  • VIN, miles, pump hours and GVWR
  • Whether the price includes federal excise tax, delivery and title fees
  • Your septage hauler permit, and the drivers who will run the truck (with CDL status)
  • Your planned down payment
  • Recent business bank statements and tax returns
  • A short list of your route and commercial customers, and your slow months

When you have a truck in mind, start with vacuum truck financing.

Frequently asked questions

Do new septic truck prices include federal excise tax?

Not always. On October 15, 2026, a new 2026 Freightliner 114SD on Truck Paper listed $282,900 and added "FET $29,346" for a total of $312,246. Its listing showed a 245 gallon tank, which looks like a data entry error, so it is left out of the price tables above. Ask every dealer whether the asking price includes FET, and confirm the amount with your tax advisor.

Is a septic truck the same as a combination sewer truck?

No. A septic truck is a vacuum tanker built to pump and haul septage, while a combination sewer truck adds a high pressure jetter for cleaning lines. A 2015 GapVax MC1510 combination truck asked $149,900 on Pumper on October 15, 2026, so make sure the listing you are pricing is the machine your work needs.

Can I finance a used septic truck with an older chassis?

It depends on the lender, and older trucks draw more questions about condition and term length. Bring pump hours, tank records and any rebuild receipts, since they matter most when the chassis has high miles.
