How to Start a Dumpster Rental Business: Costs, Permits, Trucks

How to start a dumpster rental business: dated roll-off truck and container prices from $5,695 a box, hauler permits, tipping fees and payment examples.

Quick answer

To start a dumpster rental business, confirm your city lets you haul, find a dump site and its per ton rate, then buy a roll-off truck or trailer and enough containers to keep it busy. On October 28, 2026, Custom Truck One Source listed a used 2018 Peterbilt 567 roll-off truck at a $95,500 asking price.

How do you start a dumpster rental business?

You start a dumpster rental business by confirming you are allowed to haul in your area, lining up a disposal site, then buying a roll-off truck (or a trailer) and a starter set of containers that the local work can keep busy. The truck is the biggest cost: on October 28, 2026, Custom Truck One Source listed a used 2018 Peterbilt 567 roll-off at a $95,500 asking price and a new 2026 Peterbilt 548 at $233,537 (sources below).

A workable order for a first roll-off business:

  1. Check the local rules first. Some cities require a hauler permit for every truck and container, and some give roll-off work to a single franchised hauler. That can decide whether you have a market at all.
  2. Find your dump site and its rates. Your disposal cost per ton is the number your pricing is built on.
  3. Pick your customers. Contractors, roofers, remodelers and homeowners cleaning out a house want different box sizes and rental periods.
  4. Choose the equipment. A roll-off truck with a cable or hook hoist, or a smaller trailer-based setup, plus a starter set of containers.
  5. Get the driver, registration and insurance in place, then finance the truck and cans with a payment your expected hauls can carry.

The rest of this guide puts real, dated numbers on each step where public numbers exist.

How much does it cost to start a dumpster rental business?

The truck and containers set the budget. On October 28, 2026, we found a used roll-off truck at a $95,500 asking price, a new one at $233,537, and a new 20-yard container at $5,695 and a new 7 x 20 ft bin at $6,995 from two dealers. Ten of the $5,695 boxes come to $56,950 before freight and tax.

2026 Horizon HRD 20-yard container New, 83 in x 20 ft, 4 ft sides $5,695 asking price (tarp adds $400) Chipper LLC Sales listing Oct 28, 2026
2026 Horizon 7 x 20 roll-off bin New, 7 gauge steel floor, 48 in walls $6,995 asking price Load Runner Trailers listing Oct 28, 2026
2026 PJ Trailers DR 14k Rollster New, bumper pull roll-off trailer, 14,000 lb GVWR $11,495 asking price Chipper LLC Sales listing Oct 28, 2026

What to read into that table:

  • Asking prices are not sale prices. They are where negotiation starts.
  • The new truck price leaves things out. The dealer says it does not include freight or delivery, sales tax, titling or registration fees.
  • Containers add up fast. The cans are a second large purchase, and you need enough of them that the truck is not sitting while boxes sit on job sites.

For more truck listings by chassis and hoist, plus recent auction results, see our roll-off truck price guide.

Beyond the truck and containers, budget line by line for: commercial auto and general liability insurance, hauler permits and container fees, CDL training if you need it, tarps, a yard to park the truck and store empty cans, dispatch and billing software, fuel, and enough cash to pay disposal bills before customers pay you. We do not publish dollar figures for insurance or those other items because they vary too much by state, driver and operator to be honest as a single number. Get local quotes.

Can you start a dumpster business with a trailer instead of a truck?

Yes, some operators start with a roll-off trailer pulled by a heavy pickup, which costs far less than a truck. On October 28, 2026, a new PJ Trailers DR 14k Rollster bumper pull roll-off trailer was listed at an $11,495 asking price by Chipper LLC Sales, and Nationwide Trailers listed 14 ft roll-off trailers at asking prices from $7,798 (a used PJ unit) to $11,698 (a LoneStar 20K HD).

The trade-offs:

  • Smaller boxes. These are 14 ft trailers, so they carry smaller containers than a full-size roll-off truck. That suits homeowners, cleanouts and small remodels more than commercial demolition.
  • Bins are often separate. Nationwide Trailers notes a trailer includes a container only when the listing or package says so.
  • Check the tow vehicle and hitch. Several units are gooseneck, which needs a bed-mounted hitch. Confirm your pickup's towing rating and whether the combined weight changes your licensing.

Do you need a permit to run a dumpster rental business?

Often, yes, and the rules are set city by city. Some cities require a permit for each truck and container, some charge a separate permit to place a container on the street, and some do not allow independent roll-off haulers at all because they have granted a franchise.

Three real examples, all seen October 28, 2026:

  • Permit per truck and per can. Alexandria, Virginia requires haulers to permit every vehicle and container used to collect waste in the city: $300 per mechanized or non-mechanized vehicle, $150 per pickup truck, $3 per container of 3 to 10 cubic yards and $5 per container of 10 cubic yards or more. Vehicles must be inspected by the city before the permit is final, permits run July 1 to June 30, and haulers file an annual tonnage report.
  • Franchised roll-off service. In Evanston, Illinois, residents, businesses and licensed contractors must use the city's franchised hauler for construction debris, chosen through competitive bidding. A new independent hauler cannot simply start serving that market.
  • Right of way permits. Evanston also requires a right of way permit for any dumpster placed in the public right of way, and says the city may remove an unpermitted container at the customer's cost.

Before you buy, call the city and county solid waste offices in every town you plan to serve and ask three questions: Do haulers need a permit? Is roll-off service franchised? Who pulls the street placement permit, you or the customer?

You will also need the usual company items: business registration, any state hauler registration, and driver credentials. Tandem roll-off trucks are heavy vehicles, so check the gross vehicle weight rating on the door sticker and confirm the CDL class and any USDOT number requirement with FMCSA and your state. Have your attorney or compliance advisor confirm which rules apply to your truck and routes.

How much are landfill and transfer station tipping fees?

Tipping fees are set locally, and they differ even inside one county. In Chautauqua County, New York, the 2026 schedule charges $44 per ton for construction and demolition debris at the landfill but $65 per ton at the county's transfer stations. In Henderson County, North Carolina, the transfer station charges $70 per ton for C&D debris for July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.

Facility Material Fee Source Date seen
Chautauqua County, NY landfill Construction and demolition $44 per ton Chautauqua County 2026 pricing schedule Oct 28, 2026
Chautauqua County, NY landfill Municipal solid waste $32 per ton Chautauqua County 2026 pricing schedule Oct 28, 2026
Chautauqua County, NY transfer stations Construction and demolition (scaled, one ton max) $65 per ton Chautauqua County 2026 pricing schedule Oct 28, 2026
Henderson County, NC transfer station Construction and demolition $70 per ton Henderson County FY27 fee schedule Oct 28, 2026
Henderson County, NC transfer station Clean concrete and masonry $55 per ton Henderson County FY27 fee schedule Oct 28, 2026

Two things matter as much as the per ton rate:

  • Surcharges. Chautauqua County adds charges for problem loads, including $10 for each mattress or box spring, $10 for an uncovered load, and half the load cost for loads with excess cardboard, plastic or metal. Your rental agreement needs a prohibited items list and pass-through charges that match your dump's rules.
  • Material type. Most dumpster rental loads are construction and demolition debris, which is often priced differently from household garbage. Clean concrete can be cheaper to dump but is heavy.

How do dumpster rental companies price their containers?

Most roll-off pricing combines a flat charge per haul with a weight charge for disposal, plus fees for extra days and problem loads. Public rate sheets show the structure. Use them to understand the levers, not as a price list for your market.

  • City of Marina, California (GreenWaste, effective July 1, 2026): a 20-yard construction and demolition box is a $496.83 per pull fee plus $100 per ton processing, or $596.83 with delivery and one ton. A 30-yard box is $648.86 per pull plus $100 per ton. Extra days are $32.80 per day, a dry run or relocation is $98.39, and standby time is $144.29 per hour (Marina roll-off rates, seen Oct 28, 2026).
  • City of Fargo, North Dakota: the city's own roll-off service charges $120 per haul plus landfill fees of $57 per ton, with no delivery charge, for 20-yard and 30-yard containers (Fargo Solid Waste, seen Oct 28, 2026; the page shows no effective date).

The levers you control:

  • Haul charge. Covers the truck, driver, fuel and time. Price it from your real cost per trip, including the drive to the dump.
  • Included tons and overage. Either include a weight allowance in a flat price or bill disposal per ton. Set the per ton rate at or above your actual tipping fee.
  • Rental period and extra days. A box sitting on a site earns nothing unless you charge for the extra days.
  • Dry runs, relocations and wait time. Blocked containers and moves cost you a trip. Charge for them.
  • Contamination and prohibited items. Pass through your dump's surcharges, such as mattresses and tires.

Revenue per truck depends on how many hauls a day your routes allow, how many boxes you have deployed, and how fast customers pay. We do not publish a revenue or profit figure because no public source gives one we can verify. Build yours from your own dump rates, drive times and local prices, and review it with your accountant.

How do you finance a roll-off truck and containers?

A roll-off truck and its containers are usually financed with an equipment loan or lease secured by the equipment, and some lenders will finance the truck and containers together on one deal. Ironmark is not a lender: we connect you with third-party lenders, and those lenders make the credit decision and set the rate and terms.

A startup without business tax returns is usually judged more on the owner's personal credit, experience driving or running roll-off or other waste equipment, the down payment, and evidence of demand such as contractor relationships or a permit already in hand. Our article on what lenders look at explains each factor, and equipment leasing vs financing covers which structure fits.

What is the monthly payment on a roll-off truck and dumpsters?

On the prices above, payments range from about $920 a month (ten 20-yard containers, 72 months, 9% estimated APR) to about $5,640 a month (the new $233,537 truck, 48 months, 13% estimated APR). A used truck plus ten containers runs about $2,470 to $3,680 a month.

These examples assume 10% down, estimated APRs of 9% and 13%, terms of 48, 60 and 72 months, payments rounded to the nearest $10, and exclude taxes, fees and insurance.

These are illustrations, not quotes. Ironmark does not set rates and is not a lender; your actual rate, term and down payment come from the lender and depend on your credit, the equipment and the deal. Older, high-mileage trucks may not qualify for the longest terms.

A useful check before you sign: divide the monthly payment by the number of hauls you realistically expect in a month. That tells you how much of each haul charge goes to the equipment before fuel, labor, insurance, disposal and repairs.

What are common mistakes when starting a dumpster rental business?

The most common mistake is buying the truck before checking whether the city lets you haul. Others to avoid:

  • Pricing without knowing your dump rate. If you quote a flat price and the load is heavy, the tipping fee can eat the job.
  • Too few containers. Boxes sit on sites for days. With too few, the truck waits too.
  • Ignoring the hoist. On a used truck, inspect the hoist, cables or hook, and subframe, not just the engine. Our roll-off trucks buying guide and used equipment buying checklist cover what to check.
  • No prohibited items policy. Mattresses, tires and electronics trigger surcharges at many dumps.
  • No cash cushion. You pay the dump when you tip, but contractors may pay on net terms.

What do you need for a roll-off truck and dumpster financing quote?

  • The truck you want: year, chassis, hoist make, model and type (cable or hook), hoist rating, miles, VIN, asking price, and the seller's name (dealer, auction or private party)
  • The containers: quantity, sizes, manufacturer, price per box and whether tarps and freight are included
  • Your down payment amount and where it is coming from
  • Your CDL (or your driver's) and any roll-off or waste hauling experience
  • Business formation documents, EIN, and any hauler permit or USDOT number you already hold
  • Your disposal site and its posted rates, plus any contractor relationships or letters of intent
  • Personal financial statement and recent bank statements; business tax returns if the company already operates
  • Your insurance agent's contact for proof of coverage

Buying checklist

Before you buy

  • Ask each city you plan to serve whether haulers need a permit and whether roll-off service is franchised
  • Get the posted tipping fees for C&D and household waste at your nearest landfill and transfer station
  • Get insurance quotes on the specific truck and driver

Inspecting a used roll-off truck

  • Check the hoist type (cable or hook), rating and the container lengths it handles
  • Inspect cables, hook, rails, rollers and subframe for wear and cracks
  • Run the hoist through a full load and unload cycle on site
  • Ask for service records on the hoist hydraulics, not just the engine

Before the first rental

  • Hauler permits and container stickers in place where required
  • A written rental agreement with prohibited items and pass-through fees
  • Tarps, a yard for empty containers and a way to dispatch and bill
